* Relatively low resistance against strong acids and alkalines.
* Relatively low resistance to hydrolysis at high temperatures > 180 ºC.
Meta Aramid is a high temperature fibre, suitable up to 200°C in dry conditions; care is needed when used in moist environments at high temperatures as it is prone to hydrolysis which will chemically degrade the fibres turning them to powder resulting in failure of the filter medium.
The original fibre was known as Nomex from Du Pont though today a number of alternative fibres with the same basic chemistry are available so many applications simply specify "aramid". The fibre is self extinguishing with an LOI of around 30%.
