PPS is a high temperature fibre, up to 180°C, with excellent chemical resistance except for oxidising agents such as NO2 and Oxygen itself. It has very good acid resistance and this, together with a good thermal resistance has led to wide acceptance in combustion processes.
The fibre is actually 30% sulphur by weight and it has a very high limiting oxygen index (34) when compared with the volume fibres.
Polyimide, also known as P84, is a high temperature fibre which under dry conditions can be operated up to 230°C.
It also benefits from a tri-lobal cross section which greatly enhances its filtration efficiency to the point that it is sometime used with much less expensive fibres to boost dust collection. In this application it usually forms a cap on the surface of the felt to exploit this property effectively.
It is a fibre with good chemical and thermal resistance, with only PTFE really exceeding it. Some care is needed with oxidising agents such as NO2 and the fibre can be sensitive to hydrolytic attack in hot wet conditions.
